Education And the Public Interest
$138.99 Economic globalization has been accompanied by implementation of education reforms linked to accountability and public finance schemes that emphasize student choice in schools and student loans in higher education. In the U.S. these reforms are rationalized based on intermediate variables, like the number of math credits completed in high school and net prices. However, the reforms rationalized based on this research are seldom evaluated in relation to outcomes (i.e., measures of student achievement and equal opportunity to attain an education). In Education and the Public Interest the editor re-examines the political rationales for these reforms. John Rawlss theory of justice is reconstructed to develop a framework for assessing the effects of public policy on these outcomes. This volume undertakes a comparative study of the states in the U.S. to examine how education reforms influence student achievement, high school graduation, and college access; and finance schemes influence college access. Policies implemented by states in the 1990s were associated with improved achievement, as measured by test scores for high school students. These policies also correlate with increased high school drop out rates and the widening gap in college enrolment rates across income groups. This volume considers how privatization and accountability policies can be reconstructed to reduce inequality while continuing to improve student achievement and college enrolment. 'I enjoyed reading the book and benefited from it, and I feel confident others will as well. I am particularly taken by its sweep and by the skill and persuasiveness with which the author ties together the broad trends and themes ofprivatization, globalization, school reform, preparation, equity, equality and college access.' Prof. James . Hearn, Vanderbilt University, USA'(What I)...especially like about this book is the framing of the importance of the topic in terms of the global political and economic changes and the notion of access to quality education as a basic right.' Interest Rates and Budget Deficits
$190 Despite no conclusive evidence, there is widespread belief that the high interest rates of the 1980s and 1990s in the developed world have been caused by high budget deficits. Interest Rates and Budget Deficit systematically examines this and other questions relating to the behavior of real interest rates in eleven developed countries. The results show that generalizations across the countries can be hazardous and strongly suggests that factors specific to individual countries are still of vital importance. |

Student Loans: Risks and Realities
$107.55 This timely volume objectively addresses the major issues and questions raised about student aid programs. It examines the realities of student loans and provides a balanced analysis of the present and future prospects for financing higher education. Educators, guarantee agency administrators, and state and federal officials analyze student indebtedness and the repayment of loans. They evaluate how five other industrialized nations structure grants and education loan programs and address the challenging problem of extending opportunities for higher education to low-income students. The vital need for support in the application process and for debt management counseling in high schools and colleges is discussed, as is innovative private sector support. A necessary resource for everyone concerned with higher education issues. |

$67.66 A History of Interest Rates presents a very readable account of interest rate trends and lending practices over four millennia of economic history. Despite the paucity of data prior to the Industrial Revolution, authors Homer and Sylla provide a highly detailed analysis of money markets and borrowing practices in major economies. Underlying the analysis is their assertion that "the free market long-term rates of interest for any industrial nation, properly charted, provide a sort of fever chart of the economic and political health of that nation." Given the enormous volatility of rates in the 20th century, this implies we`re living in age of political and economic excesses that are reflected in massive interest rate swings. Dynamics of Interest Rates in Cee-3
$107.85 Economic dynamics in small open economies are ruled by complex structures and interdependencies. Interest rate developments are closely related to macroeconomic dynamics. It is, therefore, important for policy setters, portfolio and risk managers to understand these dynamics. This book analyzes interdependencies between macroeconomic variables and interest rates in an integrated setting. The aim is to model the interaction of macro variables with the term structure and to forecast the yield curve. Interest rate dynamics are decomposed into three latent factors according to the Diebold and Li exponential component framework. Additionally, macro economic variables carrying important information of the state of the economy are defined. To utilize broader macroeconomic information the principal components methodology is used. Yield and macro factors are combined in a vector autoregressive model setting for the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland. Yield forecasts up to twelve months ahead are calculated with good forecasting performance. Moreover, interdependencies of the yield curve with the macroeconomy are analyzed. The models are implemented within the R programming language. |

Mathematics of Interest Rates and Finance
$34.99 PThis is a math text with the primary goal of teaching students the mathematical concepts necessary for other courses dealing with finance, insurance, and investments. It presents the basic core of mathematics needed to understand the impact of interest on the world of investments, real estate, corporate planning, insurance, and securities transactions. The value of a good foundation in the mathematical principles of finance and interest becomes apparent if you peruse the mathematics found in an investment or financial management text. Basic ideas like the present value of an annuity, the net present value, the internal rate of return, and discounted cash flows are often burdened with cumbersome notation and messy formulas. The novice learner with no previous experience often finds these to be difficult and perplexing./PPThis text has avoided the tedious arithmetic and transcription of data from finance tables by requiring the use of financial calculators. We emphasize the use of technology with preprogrammed features, but in the advanced sections we also encourage students to program their calculators. We feel this exercise will give them an understanding of the formulas and how their financial calculators perform the various computations. Because this is a problem-solving course, students will have to demonstrate an understanding that goes beyond the numbers spit out by a calculator. This understanding comes from recognizing and diagramming the structure of the problem so that the application of a formula is natural and not just an educated guess. Our goal is for students to understand well those few underlying principles that play out in nearly every finance and interest problem./PPAfter years of experience teaching this subject, we have developed certain simplifying techniques that have helped many students to have a successful experience in their studies of finance and interest. One of the most interesting principles involving the numbering of payment@A~¸Që…ÿ¾Úð |

Interest Rates, Exchange Rates and World Monetary Policy
$196.9 pA careful basic theoretical and econometric analysis of the factors determining the real exchange rates of Canada, the U.K., Japan, France and Germany with respect to the United States is conducted. The resulting conclusion is that real exchange rates are almost entirely determined by real factors relating to growth and technology such as oil and commodity prices, international allocations of world investment across countries, and underlying terms of trade changes. Unanticipated money supply shocks, calculated in five alternative ways have virtually no effects. A Blanchard-Quah VAR analysis also indicates that the effects of real shocks predominate over monetary shocks by a wide margin. The implications of these facts for the conduct of monetary policy in countries outside the U.S. are then explored leading to the conclusion that all countries, to avoid exchange rate overshooting, have tended to automatically follow the same monetary policy as the United States. The history of world monetary policy is reviewed along with the determination of real exchange rates within the Euro Area. |

$18.95 The first of this set of three independent but interrelated essays tests the Keynesian theory on the determination of the long-term rate of interest for the period 1948-1963. The second essay examines and statistically tests the theoretical relationship between long and short-term rates while the third details more fully the various hypotheses which can be tested. A scholarly and useful econometric study. iBanker's Magazinei |

Interest Rates and Coupon Bonds in Quantum Finance (Hardcover)
$108.19 "The economic crisis of 2008 has shown that the capital markets need new theoretical and mathematical concepts to describe and price financial instruments. Focusing almost exclusively on interest rates and coupon bonds, this book does not employ stochastic calculus - the bedrock of the present day mathematical finance - for any of the derivations. Instead, it analyzes interest rates and coupon bonds using quantum finance. The Heath-Jarrow-Morton and the Libor Market Model are generalized by realizing theforward and Libor interest rates as an imperfectly correlated quantum field. Theoretical models have been calibrated and tested using bond and interest rates market data. Building on the principles formulated in the author`s previous book (Quantum Finance, Cambridge University Press, 2004) this ground-breaking book brings together a diverse collection of theoretical and mathematical interest rate models. It will interest physicists and mathematicians researching in finance, and professionals working in the finance industry"--Provided by publisher. |

$14.98 In 1944, Congress enacted the GI Bill to thank the men and women who served in the armed forces for their hard work and dedication. One of the most valuable benefits included in the bill was the VA Loan. But bureaucracy and stringent procedures have made applying and qualifying for these loans complicated and unwieldy. Your Guide to VA Loans is the first book to guide veterans through the process. Readers will discover how to determine whether VA loans are right for them, how to apply, and how to deal with common problems that arise. Mortgage expert and author David Reed has more than 30 years of experience helping buyers navigate complicated loan processes. Here he offers advice on topics such as: * selecting the right VA lender * finding an agent in a town where there are few veterans * getting the best interest rate * refinancing VA loans * getting advice on VA loans while on active duty Complete with a guide to regional resource centers, sample loan applications, payment tables and a glossary of terms, this seminal guide will help all veterans fully enjoy the benefits they need and so richly deserve. |
