DIVAn in-depth exploration and exposé of the predatory nature of the student loan industry/DIVDIV /DIVDIVAlan Collinge never imagined he would become a student loan justice activist. He planned to land a solid job after college, repay his student loan debt, and then simply forget the loans ever existed. Like millions of Americans, however, in spite of working hard, Collinge fell behind on payments and entered a labyrinthine student loan nightmare./DIVDIV /DIVDIVHigh school graduates can no longer put themselves through college for a few thousand dollars in loan debt. Today, the average undergraduate borrower leaves school with more than $20,000 in student loans, and for graduate students the average is a whopping $42,000. For the past twenty years, college tuition has increased at more than double the rate of inflation, with the cost largely shifting to student debt./DIVDIV /DIVDIVIThe Student Loan Scam/Iis an exposé of the predatory nature of the $85-billion student loan industry. In this in-depth exploration, Collinge argues that student loans have become the most profitable, uncompetitive, and oppressive type of debt in American history. This has occurred in large part due to federal legislation passed since the mid-1990s that removed standard consumer protections from student loans-and allowed for massive penalties and draconian wealth-extraction mechanisms to collect this inflated debt./DIVDIV /DIVDIVCollinge covers the history of student loans, the rise of Sallie Mae, and how universities have profited at the expense of students. The book includes candid and compelling stories from people across the country about how both nonprofit and for-profit student loan companies, aided by poor legislation, have shattered their lives-and livelihoods. The Savings And Loan Crisis The Savings And Loan Crisis
$187.03

Our nation's financial institutions operated profitably over the decades despite periods of severe turmoil. Between 1980 and early 1995, however, 1,273 savings and loan associations, 1,569 commercial and savings banks and 2,330 credit unions failed in the U.S. The cost of resolving this crisis in the banking sector exceeded USD 190 billion. The Savings And Loan Crisis: Lessons from a Regulatory Failure sets the record straight about what actually happened to our banking institutions in the 1980s. As is documented by the highly respected and diverse group of former regulators, scholars and practitioners contributing to this book, the collapse of this industry was caused by a confluence of adverse economic conditions and misguided regulatory decisions. Poorly designed deposit insurance, faulty supervision, and restrictions on investments prevented savings and loans from adapting to a changing financial marketplace. Unable to use financial innovations, savings and loans could not hedge interest rate and credit risks. These factors blocked portfolio diversification and lay at the root of the crisis. The savings and loan crisis was an accident, but it was an avoidable one. Most of the factors responsible for causing and exacerbating the industry's problems were preventable, as is made clear in this volume. This book also provides an insider's view of the transformation of the financial services industry in the United States since the 1980s: how the managers and owners make decisions about product offerings and investments; how the regulators monitor performance and enforce the rules; and how Congress and the Administration influence and are influenced by the financial services industry.Lastly, it focuses attention on the lessons that should have been learned from this difficult period in the history of U.S. banking, and that should help prevent future banking crises everywhere.

Village Savings and Loan Associations Village Savings and Loan Associations
$29.48

Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) provide poor people in remote, rural areas with a safe place to store small amounts, and in doing so to build up a fund from which small, flexible loans can be taken by the members. These independent associations operate in areas that standard microfinance programs cannot reach due to high costs and have proved successful in more than 30 countries worldwide. They work without long-term technical support and injections of donor capital.Thirty years since the start of the microfinance revolution, poor people who live in many rural areas and urban slums still find it difficult to access appropriate microfinance products, even in countries with a well-developed microfinance sector. VSLAs based in the community are complementary to MFIs tending to serve the very poor whose income is less reliable, but also offering useful services to the economically secure. This manual offers a set of tools that will enable any organization, whether or not it has experience with microfinance, to set up and run successful VSLAs. It sets out a one-year program of VSLA formation, training and supervision, and includes guidance on approaches to impact evaluation and the use of a simple Management Information System to analyze field officers and overall program performance.

Free Yourself from Student Loan Debt: Get Out from Under Once and for Free Yourself from Student Loan Debt: Get Out from Under Once and for
$2.44

The average American college student owes about $17,000 in loans after graduation. Quadruple that amount for the average grad school graduate. An estimated seven million Americans have accumulated nearly $81 billion in student loan debt over the past 30 years. Not all of these borrowers are fresh out of college; many are in their late 20s, 30s, and even 40s. Indeed, the amount of student loan debt facing Americans is pervasive, if not problematic.PFortunately, a number of creative ways exist to pay off this financial burden that, for many, goes on for years and years. InIFree Yourself from Student Loan Debt/i, business writer Brian O'Connell outlines the best ways to do just that-as quickly and painlessly as possible. He guides readers through often over-looked but perfectly legitimate loan management techniques, including how to:P* Consolidate loans for easier (and lower) payments.P* Defer loans with no penalty.P* Take a break from student loans through a mechanism called forbearance.P* Get out of default status by making as few as six minimum payments.P* Fix problems that result when a loan isn't paid, with no lasting impact on credit or finances.P* Convince financial institutions to forgive loans.P* Fight the government and financial institutions that claim student loan debts weren't paid years after they were.PWith wit and wisdom, O'Connell backs up his guidance with case histories, anecdotes, information boxes, sidebars, and colorful industry profiles-all packaged together in one lively, user-friendly book. As a bonus, he offers 50 surefire tips to eliminating student loan debt.PP
