Financial assistance maxes out at $800 at the state level so students must look beyond North Dakota for adequate assistance. Federal assistance can provide from $400 up to $4,500 from the Pell grant, but in order to get the maximum amount of assistance you need to be of an exceptionally low income. The Academic Competitiveness Grant is for first and second year students, and can provide up to $1,300 for applicable students. For third and fourth year students, there’s the SMART grant which counts for up to $4,000, “for specific majors like math, science and engineering,” says Holden. There seem to be some opportunities in the federal grant programs for low-income students, but there are no full ride grants. Explore More

Mark Sanford relented Wednesday and agreed to apply for a $146 million federal loan to shore it up, after weeks of refusing to do so. Mark Sanford of South Carolina announcing Wednesday that he had applied for the $146 million federal loan that would ensure continued unemployment benefits in the state. On Wednesday, The State, the daily newspaper here in Columbia, accused the governor of playing “chicken with the lives of the 77,000” who are unemployed in South Carolina. Sanford, newly elected as head of the Republican Governors Association and known for being a fierce free-market foe of government spending, stuck to his stand, questioning the probity of the South Carolina Employment Security Commission and demanding a new audit of the agency. Sanford is now demanding that South Carolina’s Commerce Department, whose director he appoints, be given access to the state unemployment agency’s numbers, including where applicants are from, their ages, genders and occupations. South Carolina is one of three high-unemployment states, along with Michigan and Indiana, to ask for a loan from the federal government to ensure the unemployed continue to receive benefits. Explore More

That's because most asset-backed securities — investments derived from pools of debt such as your mortgage or credit card — are comprised of the payments made by consumers like you. Asset-backed securities are created by banks and other financial institutions by taking one type of loan, such as credit card debts, bundling them together and slicing the monthly payments into something like a bond. Now there are almost no new issues, because the securities that already exist are trading so cheaply, said Adam Yarnold, a trader at Braver Stern, which sells distressed securities. The central bank will buy securities guaranteed by the government-controlled home loan giants Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and Ginnie Mae, a federal agency. The IHT’s managing editor, Alison Smale, discusses the week in world news. Explore More

A September survey by the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities showed that of 504 American colleges, about 87 percent had students who lost access to lenders. At Albright College, where less than 20 percent of students take out private loans, financial-aid director Mary Ellen Duffy said some borrowers are facing double-digit interest rates or had to find new lenders this year. And Duffy said those who have trouble finding loans tend to have low credit ratings or can’t find cosigners - in other words, students who would have problems borrowing no matter what. Even with all the talk of disappearing student loans, local financial aid officials stress that there’s no need to worry about federally funded loans, such as PLUS loans for parents and Stafford loans for students.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Kari Schoeneweis will face more than $60,000 in student loan debt when she graduates from Carlow University in spring. Schoeneweis, 22, is among many students who were unaware that consolidation options are more limited now than they were for students who graduated a few years ago. Sallie Mae, Nelnet and Next Student - among the top 10 consolidators in 2007 - followed suit. Consolidation was a popular option for many years because federal loans previously carried variable rates, which hit 40-year lows in 2002. Explore More

So said Randy Green, director of financial aid at Wittenberg University in Springfield, and Tasha McDaniel, the school training director of the Great Lakes Higher education Guaranty Corp. Locally, Denison University has been little affected by the private lender market because the school doesn’t use many private lenders. More than 90 percent of the 2,055 students on the Denison campus receive some form of aid from the college, either on an all-needs basis, which is true financial aid, or a merit-based scholarship, or a combination of the two. Denison aside, once you’ve gone through the admission process and you’re accepted to a college and a financial problem arises that impacts your ability to pay, Green said, “You need to let us know. Explore More
